Elmlea Junior School

Bristol based Junior school creates a new library for pupils, with totally themed solution.

The Challenge

Following a book audit by Moduflex, the challenge was to design an engaging learning space for pupils that not only housed the current book stock but that could accommodate growing book stock in the future.

The school branding uses primary colours and incorporates a tree, leading to the idea for a woodland 'theme' where the new bi folding doors installed as part of the construction project could be used to bring the outside in, gaining maximum flexibility and enhanced engagement with the newly created outdoor reading deck.

The library needed to be multi functional to include; private reading areas, individual and group study, space for special events, effective display, accessible library shelving and book boxes. It was essential that the space was inviting and interactive, with bright colours and contemporary style to encourage reading and creative activities.

BACKGROUND

This junior school rated 'Excellent' by Ofsted received grant funding for a new IT Suite, the construction of which made room for a NEW library facility. Utilising the ground floor space, the school were excited to be gaining a dedicated school library for the first time in history. Book stock had previously been distributed within different pockets of corridors and classrooms, meaning that there was no stock control system with stock being difficult to track and monitor.

Our Solution

Each of the schools requirements were considered alongside their branding and the all important woodland theme to ensure a cohesive and intelligent result. White single sided wall mounted perimeter shelving provided essential storage and framed the library perfectly. Double sided Aspire library shelving was installed and fitted with castors, making units fully mobile should the space need to be cleared for special events.

Library shelving end panels were used to enhance display capacity and reinforce branding. Connecting study tables that can moved and adjusted to facilitate individual or group study were finished in soft colours to suite with the school branding.

Bespoke furniture items such as stand up kinder boxes for key stage 2 students and a woodland themed reading booth were designed for maximum accessibility. Graphic solutions enabled Moduflex to further incorporate the branding into the library area, with vinyl hand prints in shades of green mimicking tree leaves and a new library motto, which is a twist on the established school motto being showcased in a prominent position along the main wall.

The woodland theme continued with a selection of bean bag style seating products, some in the shape of woodland logs, others in keeping with the colour scheme.
